Changing Your Address
Updating Your Drivers License |
Moving can be as frustrating as it is exciting. The big details such as packing, hiring movers, renting a moving truck, and unpacking can be daunting, but often it's keeping track of the little things that can make moving so challenging. Here's a quick guide for making your move a lot easier.
Changing Your Address

Postal Service Change of Address Services
- The United States Postal Service will forward first and second class mail to your new address for a minimum of 60 days (12 months for first class mail!) without charge. Simply fill out a Change of Address Order Form at the postal service website. The form can be completed on-line, but for legal reasons it must still be printed, signed, and mailed to your local post office.
- If you've never used this service before or would like to learn more about mail forwarding, look over the excellent Q&A about mail forwarding put together by the US Postal Service.
- Change of Address Cards: Visit your local post office and pick up a free stack of PS Form 3576's (a.k.a. change of address notification postcards). Better yet, if you file your Change of Address Form online, you can simultaneously print personalized Address Change Notification Letters. Looking for a quicker solution? Create your own change of address cards using our on-line guide.

Who to Notify
It is no longer necessary to fill out and mail change of address cards in all cases. When you review this list take a few moments to consider which individuals can be notified of your new address via email and which organizations have websites from which you can update your address. Most credit card companies will even allow you to change your address by calling their customer service departments.
- Family members and friends
- Credit cards, banks, investment firms, insurance companies (The bottom or back of billing
statements typically include forms or instructions.)
- Magazines and newspapers (Change of address instructions are usually shown on the second or third page.)
- Internal Revenue Service: Call 1-800-829-3676 for an IRS Change of Address form. This form (Form 8822) can also be selected, downloaded, and printed from the IRS forms website. TIP: Filing this form insures that you will receive annual tax forms and notices as quickly as possible.
